There is no one-size-fits-all formula for steeping tea, but the steeping temperature and time are crucial factors that greatly impact the taste of your brew. Incorrect temperature and brewing time can result in poorly extracted brews that taste overly bitter. The suggested temperature, steep times, and tea amounts provided here serve as a foundation for achieving your ideal cup of tea. However, factors such as the quality of tea, brewing equipment, and personal preferences will ultimately determine how you can create the perfect brew. Experiment, explore, and enjoy the process of crafting your own unique tea experience.

The Perfect Brew   =   Right Tea  +  Right Temperature  +  Right Timing

Tea Type
  • Select the type of tea leaf that will be used. Options include: black, green, white, oolong, pu-erh, rooibos, or herbal. Each of these tea types offers a wide range of variations in flavor and quality, so it is important to customize your brew to suit your personal preferences. Experiment with different types of tea to discover the perfect blend that satisfies your taste buds.
Brew Volume
  • Amount of liquid used when steeping the tea. When steeping tea, the amount of liquid used is crucial. The number of teaspoons of tea recommended will depend on the brew volume. You can easily switch between ounces (fluid US) and milliliters for your convenience.
Volume Units
  • Specify your preference for measurement or volume units. US Customary or Metric.
Strength (s)
  • Specify your preference for brew strength. This will increase or decrease the suggested brewing time to the upper or lower end of the suggest range.
Temperature Units
  • Specify your preference for temperature units. Units are changeable between Fahrenheit (US) or Celsius (Metric).
Teaspoons of Tea
  • Amount of tea to use while steeping measured in teaspoons. When steeping tea, the amount to use is measured in teaspoons, calculated in half-teaspoon intervals. Depending on the type of tea and your personal preference, you may want to adjust this amount after some experimentation. The density, or weight per teaspoon, of different teas can vary greatly, making it simpler to use teaspoons rather than measuring in grams.
Steep Temperature
  • Temperature of water to use for steeping the tea based on type. When steeping tea, it is crucial to consider the temperature of the water based on the type of tea being brewed. Recommended temperatures are provided in five-degree increments, as brewing can typically be done within a range of temperatures and precise measurements are not always possible with brewing equipment. Delicate teas may necessitate cooler water to avoid a bitter taste. It is important to avoid using water that is too hot, as this can result in a bitter brew.
Steep Minutes
  • Number of minutes to steep the tea before removing the leaves. Given in half-minute intervals. A suggested range of different steep times are available for each type depending on your brew strength preference.
Decimal Points
  • When making large volumes of tea, you can change the decimal point to give a more precise results.

Tea Steeping Guide:

Heating your water
  • Begin by using fresh, cold water in your kettle. For oolong tea, heat the water to approximately 195 Fahrenheit or 90 Celsius. Refer to the calculator for the appropriate temperature for different types of tea. Water that has been left sitting for too long, already boiled, or boiled for an extended period may have lost some of its dissolved gases, resulting in a flat-tasting brew. Remember, the quality of your water is crucial in achieving the perfect cup of tea.
Measure tea leaves
  • Place about one teaspoon of tea leaves for 6 - 8 ounces of water (about 200 milliliters) in a brew basket, pouch, or tea pot.
Pour water
  • As soon as the water reaches the desired temperature (use a thermometer), slowly pour the water directly over the leaves. If using a pot heat it first with some of the water, discard the cooled water before continuing with the brew.
Timing
  • Steep your oolong tea for 3 to 5 minutes depending on your taste preference. The tea flavor will develop after the color so it's best to track steeping progress by time not appearance.
Remove leaves
  • Pour your tea into a cup or remove leaves to prevent over extraction. Over extracted tea will taste bitter and not as pleasant.
Finish and enjoy
  • Add honey, sugar or milk to taste and enjoy.
